When we received the call to help design and renovate one of Hamilton’s most beloved Coffee & Bagel stops into the new Democracy Coffee House, we were extremely excited. As local business residents of the West End of Hamilton we understood the importance of the locations and what the former establishment meant to the community, therefore integrity to the space was extremely important.
Together with M.R. Neumann Architect we were able to transform the space into a modern establishment that would bring families and patrons together with its open concept and decor.
The design concept for Democracy was simple: industrial garage. Polished concrete floors, exposed steel beams, and a large glass garage roll-up door, connect the coffee shop to the outdoors during the warmer seasons. A modern skylight was also added to bring light in from above while reclaimed materials were used where possible for all the furniture.
The restaurant now seats 66 people, has a fully operational kitchen at the back and has become a neighbourhood favourite once again.
Construction completed summer 2013.
